Why do poor use cell phones more?

A countrywide study had shown that poor people have the highest proportions of their incomes spent on airtime on mobile phones.
Tanzanians irrespective of their income spend about 15% of their income on mobile phones, according to Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) and World Bank data. Experts put the figure at 30 per cent and there are reasons to believe that the less income people have, the higher the proportion that is spent on airtime. Experts in Tanzania and other countries have carried out surveys that prove that the exclusive use of non wood forest products (NWFP), apart from supplementing nutrition to households and generating income can greatly reduce the increasing dependency on the use of forest wood products.
Forests of Tanzania, like those of other tropical countries provide many NWFPs such as food, fuel, fodder, thatching materials and medicine to the rural population. These provide income to the rural population yet little research has been done into improving the protection and management of these products.
