Health centres miss essential facilities

A study undertaken by a non-governmental organization Women’s Dignity has revealed that a number of health centres and dispensaries in Tanzania lack important services which are relevant to maternal healthcare.
The study aimed to identify developments and highlight gaps existing in the health sector between 2006 and 2009 was undertaken in 10 districts in mainland Tanzania namely Chamwino, Kongwa, Singida rural, Iramba, Hamdeni, Korogwe, Songea rural, Namtumbo, Kisarawe and Kibaha.

Dollar takes over shilling

Despite the Government’s emphasis to use local currency in local transactions, it has been revealed that the use of the US dollar in local transactions cannot be easily avoided in some sectors of the economy.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Monday, a tourism expert Moustafa Khataw, said the tourism industry especially tour operators cannot avoid the use of dollars because of a number of reasons.

Opposition fails to unite yet again

LEADERS of opposition parties in Tanzania have admitted that time is not yet ripe to form an alliance due to a number of pertinent issues yet to be resolved.
The chief campaigner and strategist for the Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) candidate Prof Mwesiga Baregu said there were many reasons as to why even this time around they cannot unite.
“There were two alternatives, forming an alliance like the Kenyans did with the NARC, or rallying behind a strong candidate with a wide following.

Renewable energy experts underscore need for finance aid

With an aim to strengthen the running and administration of their body, the Tanzania Renewable Energy Association (TAREA) has elected five members who will lead the association for the period of three years from now.
Elected members and their positions in brackets are Prof. Geoffrey John (chairperson), eng. Mzumbe Musa (vice chairperson) and Felistas Coutinho (treasurer).
Executive members of the committee include eng.Hamis Mikate, Alex Mutiganzi, eng Richard Madete and Julius Kilimo while member of the technical committee is Godwin Msigwa.

EABC to discuss infiltration of fake goods in East Africa

THE East African Business Council (EABC) will hold a two-day conference for Business leaders and government officials to discuss and deliberate best options to confront the growing threat of illicit trade in the East African Community (EAC) member states.
The EABC Communications Officer, Godwin Muhwezi Bonge said the conference is scheduled in Nairobi between October 6 and 7 in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi where Kenyan president Emilio Mwai Kibaki will officiate its opening.

Fan of Vuvuzela? Wait for them in commonwealth

THE plastic horn which was World cup’s sound track in South Africa early this year is going to return in the Commonwealth games scheduled in New Delhi India between 0ctober 3-14, this year.
The cacophonous trumpet which received a resounding thumb down in Europe following reservations against its high decibel level is not a problem at all in India and organizers of the event have okayed them.
“In India we enjoy sports with a lot of noise. We are not like Europeans,” said the event’s official merchandising partner, Premier Sports.

Will Azam break Simba-Yanga premiership supremacy?

Vodacom Premier has kicked off in six venues in Tanzania on 21 August 2010 and as usual the bigger teams have defeated the recently promoted ones.
The incumbent champion, Simba Sports Club defeated African Lyon by 2-0 in the match which took place at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Jerson Tegete lifted the last season runners up Young Africans for his lone goal against Police Dodoma at Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma.
Azam which finished as the second runner up in the last season punished the host Arusha FC by 2-0 results in an exciting match held at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium.

After being held to a historic away 1-1 draw with World Cup regulars Algeria in the 2012 Africa Nations Cup qualifier match recently, the national soccer team, Taifa Stars is now focusing for a yet unpredictable match against Morocco to be held in September in Dar es Salaam.
It was joy and celebrations as fans hugged the players during their return from Algeria.

Sparks flying between Boeing and Kenya Airways

Recent announcement by Boeing aircraft manufacturers that that their first delivery of the Boeing 787 brand to their customers could be pushed from end of this year to early next year has caused worries for airlines in Eastern Africa.
Leading airlines operating in Eastern Africa like Kenya Airways (KQ) and Ethiopian Airlines (ET) have raised their worries over Boeing decision which could see these two rival airlines experience extra costs.

Revise land legislation act Govt. told

Experts and land players have challenged the Government to make sure that the land act of 1999 no. 4 and 5 is revised to make it clearly identifiable by all people especially those living in rural areas.
This was said in Morogoro early this week at a National Land Stakeholders workshop and Dialogue which was organised by Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) in collaboration with Eastern and Southern Africa Small Scale farmers’ forum (ESAFF).
